the Gaz de France City Walk

Sunday, June 15, 2008, the FFRP (French Hiking Federation) and its partner Gaz de France are initiating the 1st Gaz de France City Walk. The aim of this event is to introduce people to walking and Paris from a different perspective. Whether you're a committed hiker or just a curious stroller, take advantage of this exceptional event.

Date: Sunday, June 15, 2008, 7:30 a.m. to noon
Place: departure and arrival Place de la Bastille, walk around eastern Paris
Open to all, free of charge - no need to register in advance

The route

The Gaz de France City Walk is a 9 km loop through the streets of the capital, starting from Place de la Bastille. The itinerary, marked out by the trail markers of the French Hiking Federation, takes you through places like:

  • Buttes-Chaumont park,
  • Saint Louis Hospital,
  • the Marais district,
  • Place des Vosges,
  • Saint-Martin Canal.

The event is open to everyone. The route has been made especially accessible to pushchairs and people in wheelchairs. The roads have been closed to cars over the whole route and throughout the duration of the walk.

The Bastille village

A marquee village will be set up on Place de la Bastille (on the Arsenal side) from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., for participants at the start and end of the walk. There will be information stands and entertainment throughout the day. 15,000 people are expected to take part.

The Gaz de France City Walk and sustainable development:

Gaz de France incorporates sustainable development into all its activities. In keeping with the Group's values, the environmental impact of the Gaz de France City Walk has been reduced to a minimum. Concrete measures have been taken and will work with the involvement of all participants.

  • The village has been designed with reusable or recyclable materials.
  • All the communication materials associated with the event are made of recyclable paper or with wood from eco-certified forests. They are printed using vegetable-based ink.
  • The location of the Bastille village, at an intersection point of numerous underground and bus routes, should encourage participants to use public transport.
  • All along the route, participants will encounter reminders of sustainable development issues.
